Walking through the shaded hillside pathways of the Yerevan Zoological Park (Երևանի կենդաբանական այգի) during my visit to Armenia brought back a flood of cherished childhood memories. Remembering how excited my family and I used to feel strolling along these very same paths years ago, I was deeply heartened to witness the sweeping ecological and structural improvements transforming the zoo for a new generation.
From Nostalgic Family Walks to Modern Wildlife Conservation
Originally established in 1940 across a 35-hectare natural volcanic canyon along Myasnikyan Avenue in northeastern Yerevan, the Yerevan Zoo has served for decades as a beloved gathering place for Armenian families and school children. Beginning in 2011, under the leadership of the Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets (FPWC) and international zoological partners including Amsterdam's Artis Royal Zoo, the park embarked on a comprehensive modernization program.
Where cramped Soviet-era concrete cages once stood, expansive, naturalistic enclosures have been constructed to respect animal welfare, veterinary science, and natural topography. As an avid photographer, I spent hours walking the canyon trails with my camera, capturing portraits of the animals and the lush greenery that now surrounds their habitats.
