Armenian Culture: "Border" at the Louvre | Nara's TV Show

Armenian cinema achieved an extraordinary international milestone in Paris when director Harutyun Khachatryan's poetic documentary film "Border" («Սահման») received a warm standing ovation at the Musée du Louvre. Attended by David Mouradyan, president of the National Cinema Academy of Armenia and vice-president of the Armenian Association of Film Critics, the screening placed contemporary Armenian auteur filmmaking at the crossroads of world art.

Abbas Kiarostami's Selection at the Musée du Louvre

During a special retrospective hosted at the Auditorium du Louvre in Paris, internationally renowned Iranian film director, screenwriter, and photographer Abbas Kiarostami was invited by museum curators to select two of his own motion pictures alongside a single masterpiece from world cinema. Without hesitation, Kiarostami chose Harutyun Khachatryan's "Border" as the most extraordinary contemporary work he had witnessed—remarking that his very first viewing of the film fundamentally transformed his perspective on cinema and the human condition.

Interview with Director Harutyun Khachatryan on "Border"

Following the film's premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR)—where Khachatryan also signed a landmark cultural cooperation memorandum between the Golden Apricot Yerevan International Film Festival and Rotterdam—the director shared his reflections on the making and philosophy of "Border":

  • On the Narrative & Symbolism of "Border": Set along the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, the film blends veridical documentary observation with poetic symbolism, following displaced refugees who dream of returning home. Accomplished entirely without spoken dialogue, the film examines humanity's longing to transcend emotional, moral, and psychological borders. Audiences in Rotterdam and Paris understood every frame without a single word being spoken.
  • On Gradual Festival Presentation: Prior to its Armenian premiere, "Border" was invited to screen across nearly 30 countries and 20 major international festivals, allowing the work to resonate organically with global critics and audiences.
  • On Sociological Honesty in Poetic Cinema: Rather than filming glossy, superficial portraits of comfortable life, Khachatryan emphasizes that authentic cinema must confront hardship with unflinching honesty and visual poetry: "A man of art cannot do one job only... My camera is my weapon."
  • On the Rotterdam & Golden Apricot Memorandum: As Khachatryan's fourth work screened at Rotterdam, the bilateral agreement facilitates film collection exchanges and international co-financing for emerging Armenian directors—already helping finance more than ten new independent film projects, alongside masterclasses by figures such as Abbas Kiarostami and Jerzy Skolimowski at the 6th Golden Apricot Festival.
