My favorite movies

I love watching movies, and analyzing them. Here I will talk about those movies that I find really interesting and meaningful.

1. 21 GRAMS

21 Grams (2003) — Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu

21 Grams is a 2003 film drama directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu and written by Guillermo Arriaga. It stars Sean Penn, Naomi Watts, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Benicio del Toro.

An extraordinary story of HOPE, LOVE & REVENGE

The emotionally and physically charged lives of three people, a college professor (Sean Penn), an ex-con (Benicio del Toro), and a young mother with a reckless past (Naomi Watts), are brought together by fate. Now vengeance will take them to the heights of love, the depths of revenge, and the promise of redemption.

"As pieces of the puzzle snap into place, it's impossible not to be sucked in." — Christy Lemire (Associated Press)

21 Grams is a movie which interweaves several plot lines around the consequences of a tragic automobile accident. Penn plays a critically ill academic mathematician, Watts plays a grief-stricken mother, and del Toro plays a born-again Christian ex-convict whose faith is sorely tested in the aftermath of the accident.

The movie is presented in a non-linear arrangement where the lives of the characters are depicted before and after the accident. The three main characters each have 'past', 'present', and 'future' story threads, which are shown as non-linear fragments that punctuate elements of the overall story, all imminently coming toward each other and coalescing as the story progresses.

The Story: College professor Paul Rivers and his wife Mary find their union precariously balanced between life and death. He is mortally ill and awaiting a heart transplant, while she hopes to become pregnant with his child through artificial insemination. Cristina Peck, having matured since her reckless past, is a beloved older sister to Claudia, a good wife to Michael, and a loving mother to two little girls. Her family radiates hope and joy. Much farther down the socioeconomic scale, ex-con Jack Jordan and his wife Marianne struggle to provide for their two children while Jack reaffirms his commitment to religion. A tragic accident that claims several lives places these couples in each other's orbit. In the aftermath, Paul confronts his own mortality, Cristina takes action to come to terms with her present and perhaps her future, and Jack's faith is put to the test. If spiritual equilibrium is to be regained by any one of them, it could come at great cost to the others. Yet the will to live, and the instinct to reach out to another person for support, remains ever present among them all.

Why the Non-Linear Structure Works So Powerfully

As the second installment in Alejandro González Iñárritu and screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga's celebrated "Trilogy of Death"—alongside Amores Perros (2000) and Babel (2006)—21 Grams uses its fractured timeline not as a stylistic gimmick, but as an emotional mirror of trauma itself. When grief or sudden loss strikes, human memory does not process events in neat chronological order; instead, moments of joy, guilt, and longing collide all at once. Cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto's grainy, handheld 35mm photography and bleach-bypass color palette further immerse the viewer in the characters' raw emotional states, making the eventual convergence of Paul, Cristina, and Jack's storylines deeply unforgettable.
